Cultural Heritage Attractions

Sri Lanka has a deep and rich cultural heritage, with many of its most significant sites recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These attractions range from ancient cities and rock fortresses to sacred temples and colonial fortifications.

Ancient cities and rock fortress

Sacred City of Anuradhapura

What it is: The first capital of Sri Lanka, founded in the 4th century BCE and a major center of Theravada Buddhism for centuries.
Key features: Contains well-preserved ruins of ancient palaces, monasteries, and immense dagobas (stupas), such as the Jetavanarama and Ruwanwelisaya. It is also home to the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, the world's oldest historically documented tree, which grew from a cutting of the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.

Ancient City of Polonnaruwa

What it is: Sri Lanka's second medieval capital, which rose to prominence in the 11th and 12th centuries and features a different architectural style than Anuradhapura.
Key features: Highlights include the Royal Palace complex, the circular Vatadage, and the stunning Gal Vihara, featuring four massive Buddha statues carved from a single granite rock.

Ancient City of Sigiriya

What it is: An iconic rock fortress and city built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century CE, perched atop a 200-meter-high volcanic plug.
Key features: The site features ingenious water gardens, frescoes of celestial maidens, the ancient Mirror Wall, and the famous Lion Gate at the start of the final climb. The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views.

Sacred temples

Golden Temple of Dambulla

What it is: The largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, continuously inhabited by monks since the 3rd century BCE.
Key features: Five main caves filled with stunning murals and over 150 Buddha statues, including a 14-meter-long reclining Buddha.

Sacred City of Kandy

What it is: The last capital of the ancient Sinhalese kings and a sacred Buddhist site nestled in the hills of central Sri Lanka.
Key features: It is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha and is the focal point of the annual Esala Perahera festival.

Mihintale

What it is: A sacred mountain near Anuradhapura, considered the site where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka.
Key features: The area includes numerous ancient temples, rock inscriptions, and is an important pilgrimage site. The Summit Rock provides excellent views.

Colonial forts and museums

Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications

What it is: A well-preserved coastal fort initially built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and heavily fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century.
Key features: Visitors can walk along the ramparts and explore the grid of streets lined with Dutch and British colonial-era buildings. It is a lively city with museums, shops, and cafes.

Jaffna Fort

What it is: A large star-shaped fort originally built by the Portuguese in 1618 and later expanded by the Dutch.
Key features: While historically significant, it is currently a military garrison, and visitors can explore the fort walls and other remains. It offers a glimpse into Sri Lanka's colonial and civil war history.
